Join us for a sparkling new class series led by the talented Laura Rowley of local Illuminated Press! Take the entire series or pick a class à la cart. If you are taking classes #3 or 4 independently, please only sign up if you have experience in bookbinding. Read class descriptions below for details. You will find pricing listed in 3 tiers to reflect financial diversity. We ask that you check in with your heart and your bank account in order to choose the tier that best suits you. If you can pay more, please consider doing so as that helps cover the instructor’s time and costs for attendees who must pay less.
Class 3: Wooden Coptic Stitch / January 13th, 2024 9a – 5p (w/lunch break)
The Coptic Stitch is a hardcover book with an exposed chain sewing along the spine. In this class, students will learn how to make a book with beautiful black walnut wooden covers. In the first part of the class, we’ll discuss the history of this book structure, drill holes into the covers, and sand them smooth. In the second part, students will learn how to fold and sew the pages to the book cover. Some bookbinding or sewing experience is recommended for this class; recommended ages 12 and up.

Class 1: Pamphlets and Variations / July 8th, 2023 10a – 1p Pamphlets and Variations: learn the basics of bookbinding including an overview of tools and materials and learning pamphlet stitches. They include the Single and Double Pamphlet. More information + to register for this class.
Class 2: Hardcover Accordion Fold / October 14th, 2023 10a – 1p Learn how to fold the interior pages and adhere decorative paper or book cloth as hard covers. More information + to register for this class.
Class 4: Hardcover Case Binding / April 13th, 2024 9a – 5p Learn how to craft the quintessential hardcover book covered with bookcloth and decorative paper. First part of the class will include creating the covers and the second part will include sewing the sections together and adhering them to the covers. More information + to register for this class.
About Laura:
Laura Rowley (she/they) is a teaching book artist from Trumansburg, NY. She studied bookbinding, letterpress printing, and papermaking at Wells College (BA) and The University of Alabama (MFA). Laura is the founder of Illuminated Press, a micro press dedicated to sharing the art and craft of bookmaking, printing, and papermaking. This mission is pursued by publishing handmade editions of books and by teaching community classes locally and beyond.
